Same day delivery is an essential service for many companies these days but often seen as the “last resort”, if deadlines have to be met or an pre-arranged delivery has not been possible. It’s often seen as an expensive luxury, and as such many retailers don’t offer a same day delivery option to their customers, as they know they either won’t be able to fulfil it, or they won’t make a profit on the sale.
This misconception needs to change, as offering same day delivery services could be the “make or break” option that makes up the end customer’s mind. With e-giant Amazon now rolling out same day delivery services across select areas of the UK, will you fall behind if you don’t offer this too?
Stats from 2015 show that 18% of customers wanted the fastest delivery option possible then, with 61% willing to pay extra if it means they get their item on the same day. Roll forward to 2017 and we’re seeing now that out of a study of 523 people, 67% said they would spend more if they had the same day delivery option, with 52% also saying they’d purposely select a company giving the option that one that did not.
Of course, it largely depends on your offering as to whether your business model is suited to a same day delivery service; the biggest areas for consumers to want the quickest delivery will always be those where time is of the essence; gifts, food and clothing being 3 of the strongest (particularly when seasonal events are close, such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day and the Summer holidays.
B2C business models aren’t the only ones to see a rise in the number of end customers selecting the same day delivery option, however. Services such as law firms, solicitors and engineering companies also have a strong market for same day delivery options, particularly where deadlines are concerned. Getting an item from one location to another same day can make or break a deal, so again, is your business losing custom if you’re not offering this option to your clients and traders?
